The Recent Shootings.
This is an editorial written by our former editor-in-chief Madison Aument on the recent shootings:
After today, I am saddened for the families affected by this tragedy and my heart truly goes out to them. I am equally saddened by the insensitivity I have witnessed today. After a slur of tweets and posts, one in particular that read "God is on my side today because I got out of my quiz sixth period" I am disappointed and disturbed that I go to school with people like this. Justifying these words with "it happens so often I should be able to make jokes" is further proof that there must be a open and wide conversation about the domestic terrorism that the United States has experienced 352 different times within a 334 day period. Statistics show that gun control is an effective method in other countries for combating these mass shootings. While this may not be the only answer, it must be discussed along with increased and improved mental health care and screening. This issue should be treated as terrorism; it should not be called anything other than terrorism. Time after time, the media fails to call these events acts of terrorism causing a failure to act. Our government has continually failed to make a decision on this issue- and it is clear that at a point when the number is a mass shooting or more everyday- change, real change, must be made.

How long was a Roman mile?
The Romans used a unit of distance called the mille passum, which literally translated into "a thousand paces." Since each pace was considered to be five Roman feet—which were a bit shorter than our modern feet—the mile ended up being 5,000 Roman feet, or roughly 4,850 of our modern feet.
What was the first metal used by man?
Over 4,000 years ago, when it was discovered that minerals could be melted, curiosity led man to combine melted metals (alloys). By accident they made bronze by adding tin to copper. Another combination of zinc and copper made brass.

ATTENTION MAZE RUNNER FANS! If you loved the first movie/book in the saga (there will be a new book next year btw), then you have to go and see the new movie, The Scorch Trials! Of course, the movie may not follow the book exactly, but Dylan O' Brien is the main character. C'mon how can someone watch a movie without Dylan.
Cute Dog Pic!

Summer Contest!
We are fully aware that summer has came to an end, but is summer REALLY over? We would like to reflect on the amazing things we have done over break. To do this, Cope Journalism will be holding a contest for the most outstanding summer picture! Bust out that camera of yours and show everyone that you have what it takes to re-create the excitement of summer! You can send in your photos to [email protected], or if they are printed, make sure to drop them in Mrs. Faulkner's mailbox at H-22 or her box in the office. Good luck!
Got VitaRain?
Are you tired of drinking from the rusty old water fountains on campus or spending too much money on water from the vending machines? Drop by H-22 to pick up a refreshing VitaRain! Drinks only cost a dollar, but hurry while supplies last!
